Basic information:

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is the linchpin of China's drive to explore and harness high technology and the natural sciences for the benefit of China and the world. Comprising a comprehensive research and development network, a merit-based learned society and a system of higher education, CAS brings together scientists and engineers from China and around the world to address both theoretical and applied problems using world-class scientific and management approaches.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) President's International Fellowship Initiative, PIFI, is a funding program designed to establish scientific cooperation and promote research communication around the globe. It is open to all scientific research personnel worldwide.

PIFI Call for Applications

Aiming at promoting global research mobility, the PIFI is now calling for applications in the following five categories:

1. PIFI DISTINGUISHED SCIENTIST

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

Conduct academic exchange activities in at least two CAS-affiliated institutions (research institutes or universities) in 1-2 weeks.

WHAT DO WE OFFER?

A package covering living expenses,transportation costs, insurance and an allowance.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Well-established and internationally recognized scientists.

2. PIFI AMBASSADOR

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

Coordinate and participate in related activities at the academy level ·Visit CAS for 2 veeks Visit at least three CAS-affiliated institutions (research institutes or universities) .

WHAT DO WE OFFER?

A package covering living expenses,meals,transportation costs,insurance and lecture fee (consulting fee) .

WHO CAN BE RECOMMENDED?

PIFI fellows who have achieved significant results.

3. PIFI YOUNG LEADER

WHAT WILL YOU DO? 

Participate in training and exchanges at CAS for no less than one week Visit at least two CAS-affiliated institutions (research institutes or universities) No less than 20 visits will be funded for each project. 

WHAT DO WE OFFER?

A package covering living expenses,meals,transportation costs and insurance.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Excellent doctoral and master's students as well as postdoctoral fellows from top universities and research institutions around the globe.

4. PIFI VISITING SCIENTIST

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

Conduct academic visits or cooperative research at CAS for 1-6 months.

WHAT DO WE OFFER?

A package covering transportation costs,insurance and an allowance.

*The funding amount depends on your length of stay and your qualifications.

WHO CAN APPLY? 

Excellent foreign scholars who work in foreign institutions (including postdoctoral fellows).

5. PIFI GROUP 

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

Conduct visits,exchanges and cooperative research with one CAS leading team for 3 years.

WHAT DO WE OFFER?

Funding criteria refers to one of three categories:PIFI Distinguished Scientist,PIFI Visiting Scientist and PIFI Young Leader.

*The CAS team leader shall negotiate with the foreign team leader to choose an appropriate project execution method.

WHO CAN APPLY?

International scientists with outstanding academic achievements and significant international influence can apply as a foreign team leader.

Team members should be recommended by the foreign team leader.

Documents Needed

1. Signed application form

2. A recent passport-sized digital photo (in color)

3. Scanned copy of first page of passport with personal information

4. A recommendation letter from CAS host researcher (if applicable)

5. Detailed plan, including but not limited to: collaboration background; objective; detailed description; timetable; anticipated results (if applicable)

Application Procedures

1. Applications must be submitted through the main host institution affiliated to CAS. Applications submitted by individuals will NOT be accepted.

2. Applicants should identify an appropriate CAS host researcher working as a faculty member at a CAS-affiliated host institution before application.

3. Applicants should send the application form and all material to the CAS host researcher who will be responsible for submitting the application via the CAS Academia Resource Planning (ARP) system.

4. Applications are open all year round and should be reviewed within 3 months of submission. Applicants should leave enough time for their applications to pass the host institutions' submission process.
