Introduction
Brief introduction: Institute of Mechanics (IMECH), Chinese Academy of Sciences was established in 1956. It is a national research center devoted to the study of various branches of theoretical and applied mechanics.
Subject characteristics: the Institute has focused its researches on the following four regions:
. Science & Technology of Microsystems
. Science & Technology of Aerodynamics
. Microgravity Science
. State Key Engineering Problems
At present, there are eight main research directions:
. Nano/Micro Scale Mechanics and Microsystem Mechanics
. Process and Mechanism of Complex Flow
. High Temperature Gas Dynamics and Technology of Supersonic Flight
. Frontiers of Microgravity Science
. Biomechanics and Biotechnology of Cells and Molecules
. Mechanical Problems & Key Technologies of Ocean Petroleum & Gas Exploitation
. Engineering Mechanics in Relation to Western China Development
. Advanced Materials Processing and Mechanics
Academic achievements: more than 200 national awards, CAS awards and ministerial awards have been achieved since IMECH was instituted, among which there are 4 national first prizes, 9 national second prizes and 8 national third prizes. There are also 45 ongoing projects including national 921 projects, 863 projects, 973 projects, major and key projects of Chinese Academy of Sciences, tackling key subjects and natural science foundations.
Qualification of teachers: IMECH is one of the earliest institutions of training graduate students, conferring doctoral degree and establishing postdoctoral research station. At present, there are 54 doctoral supervisors, 120 master student supervisors and 320 PH.D candidates, Master students and post-doctor research fellows in the institute.
Scientific research and learning conditions: master students are living in the “apartment for youths” when enrolling. The classrooms in the institute have been newly decorated during the past few years, in order to provide a good learning environment for the students. The library of IMECH is an open professional one, which has 14000 foreign books, 16000 chinese books, 300 chinese periodicals and 400 foreign periodicals. It is one of the most systematic and perfect literatures-collecting department in the field of mechanics.
Major enrollment: the IMECH will recruit 80 Master students in four majors in 2010, that is fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, engineering mechanics, general and basic mechanics.
