  • Research developments on DC arc laminar plasma-jet

         Long laminar plasma jets have been successfully generated with non-transferred DC arc plasma torches at atmospheric pressure in our institute several years ago. Experimental diagnostics on the jet characteristics have been performed systematically, and the feasibility of the laminar jet for material surface processing has been investigated these years.

        Results show that the laminar plasma jet has good stability, low working noise, adjustable jet length with the change of generating parameters and much lower axial temperature and velocity gradient, compared with a conventional turbulent plasma jet. The laminar jet has good stiffness to withstand the effects of natural convection, laterally injecting of cold gas and particulate matter. These characteristics bring about good process reproducibility, controllability and products reliability when the laminar jet is used for re-melting hardening, cladding and spraying coating of metal surface, and at the same time, make it a rather ideal object to correlate theoretical analysis or numerical simulation with the experimental work.
