Beijing Drop Tower - Microgravity/Low-gravity Experimental Platform for Ground Foundation

Date:2023-10-08

The microgravity experimental platform of Beijing Drop Tower is a nationally significant ground facility for conducting microgravity experiments. Meanwhile, it serves as a representation of China's advancements in the field of microgravity science and its applications. The platform primarily comprises laboratory module components, a lifting and electromagnetic release system, a recovery system, a central control system, measurement equipment, and auxiliary facilities. The Beijing Drop Tower has a total height of 116 meters above ground and 8 meters below ground, with a microgravity generation time of 3.6 seconds and a microgravity level of 10-5g in two capsules and 10-3in one capsule. The experimental load in the single capsule is 90/170kg, whereas in the double capsule it is 30kg. The experimental space measures Φ820mm×1200mm in the single capsule and Φ560mm×550mm in the double capsule, with a recovery overload is less than 15g.

The principal mission of the Beijing Drop Tower's microgravity experimental platform is to provide comprehensive assistance and support for investigations in microgravity fluid physics, microgravity combustion science, space fundamental physics, space technology verification, space material science, space biotechnology, popular science education and other related fields.

The low gravity experimental platform of Beijing Drop Tower is primarily composed of laboratory module components, a sophisticated moving mechanism,an advanced brake system, shafting, control system, and comprehensive detection auxiliary facilities. The falling height of the low gravity experimental platform is 50 meters, and the dropping time is less than 3.5 seconds, with the low gravity level is 0.1g ~ 0.4g as well as the experimental load is 50kg. The experimental space within it is Φ800mm×1000mm, and the recovery overload is less than 15g.

The low gravity experiment platform is primarily utilized for simulating the gravitational conditions found on the moon, Mars, and asteroids.
